Four Prayers for Our Fallen Heroes

"Greater love hath no one than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13

Each year, on Memorial Day, our calendars mark a moment to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. But, amidst the excitement of an impending summer, how often do we truly pause to pray for our fallen heroes? Consider incorporating a prayer of thanks and remembrance into your Memorial Day traditions, with those below serving as inspiration:

A Prayer of Thanks for Military Families Who Have Lost Loved Ones

Today we remember those who gave their lives in service to our nation. We lift up the families who carry the weight of that sacrifice every day. Grant them comfort in their sorrow, strength in their loss, and peace in knowing their loved ones are not forgotten. We thank You for their courage and the legacy they leave behind. May we live in a way that honors their sacrifice.

A Prayer of Thanks for Freedom

Lord we thank You for the gift of freedom— for the liberty to speak, to worship and to gather. We are grateful for those who have stood guard over these rights, and for the many blessings that come with living in a land of liberty. Help us to use our freedoms wisely and always be mindful of the cost at which they were secured.

A Prayer for Those Currently Serving

We lift up all those who serve in our armed forces today. Protect them as they protect others—give them courage in the face of danger, strength in times of trial, and wisdom in their decisions. Surround them with Your peace, and bring them safely home to those they love. May they always feel the gratitude of a thankful nation.

A Prayer of Thanks for Ultimate Freedom

As we honor the memory of those who have laid down their lives in service to our country, we are reminded of an even greater sacrifice— the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who gave His life so that we might live in ultimate freedom from sin and death. Through His death and resurrection we find hope, redemption, and eternal life. Help us, Lord, to be faithful stewards of these freedoms. Let us walk in humility, in gratitude, and in love, always mindful of the price that was paid.
