Your Guide to Decorating Your Christmas Tree This Season!
By Sabrina Novacov, Programming & Development Manager
There is something special about the moment a Christmas tree begins to take shape. A strand of twinkling lights, a favorite ribbon, a collection of treasured ornaments, and suddenly, an ordinary corner of your home becomes a place filled with warmth, nostalgia, and Christmas memories.
Decorating the Christmas tree is one of the season's most beloved traditions. Whether you prefer a classic look with red and gold accents, a winter wonderland of silver and white, or a colorful tree filled with ornaments collected over the years, the best Christmas trees reflect the people and memories that make the season meaningful.
Here is your step-by-step guide to decorating a beautiful Christmas tree, from the first strand of lights to the final ornament.

Step 1: Choose Your Christmas Tree Style
Before unpacking the decorations, take a moment to imagine how you want your Christmas tree to look and feel. Do you love a traditional Christmas aesthetic, or are you drawn to something a little more modern?
Here are a few timeless styles to inspire your decorating:
- Classic Christmas: Red, green, gold, and plaid ribbon create a warm, traditional look.
- Winter Wonderland: White, silver, icy blue, and shimmering ornaments bring a snowy, elegant feel to your home.
- Rustic Christmas: Natural wood ornaments, ribbon, pinecones, and warm white lights create a cozy, country-inspired tree.
- Nostalgic Christmas: Vintage decorations, handmade ornaments, and family heirlooms make your tree feel like a treasured collection of Christmases past.
- Whimsical Christmas: Bright colors, playful ornaments, candy canes, and oversized bows bring a sense of fun to your holiday decorating.
You don't have to follow a single theme, either. Some of the most memorable trees combine decorations with sentimental pieces collected over many years.
Step 2: Start With the Lights
Lights are the foundation of a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. They create the glow that makes your tree feel special and help every ornament stand out.
Begin by checking your lights to make sure they work before placing them on the tree. Then, starting near the trunk, weave the strands in and out of the branches, working your way from the bottom to the top. Placing some lights deeper inside the tree and others closer to the tips creates a fuller, more dimensional glow.
For an especially inviting effect, step back occasionally and look at the tree from across the room. Adjusting the lights as you go can help you spot darker areas and create a more balanced glow.
Step 3: Hang Your Favorite Ornaments
Now comes the part many families look forward to most: decorating the tree with ornaments.
Start with your larger ornaments, spacing them throughout the tree to distribute color and visual weight. Then fill in the gaps with medium-sized pieces and finish with smaller ornaments that add detail.
Try hanging some ornaments closer to the trunk and others toward the outer branches. This creates depth and helps the tree look full from every angle.
Most importantly, don't feel that every ornament needs to match.
Step 4: Choose a Tree Topper
The tree topper is the finishing touch that draws the eye upward and completes your design.
A traditional star or an angel can add a sweet touch to completing the tree.
If your tree is especially tall, choose a topper with enough visual presence to stand out without overpowering the branches. For a smaller tree, a simple, lightweight decoration may be the perfect fit.
Make sure the topper is secure and that the branches can support its weight.
Step 5: Finish With the Details
Before declaring your tree complete, take a few minutes to look at the overall design. This is your opportunity to make small adjustments that bring everything together.
Fluff any branches that look compressed, reposition ornaments that are clustered too closely, and fill any noticeable gaps with ribbon or a decorative accent. If you have a tree skirt, arrange it neatly around the base to conceal the stand and create a finished look.
You can also place a few wrapped gifts beneath the tree to introduce another layer of color and texture.
Finally, turn on the lights, step back, and enjoy the view. Sometimes, the best finishing touch is simply appreciating the tree you've created.
A Christmas Tree Filled With Meaning
The best decorations are the ones that make you smile each time you walk into the room.
