What is Patriot's Day?

While the most popular holiday surrounding the U.S. is Independence Day on July 4, there are a number of other commemorations that point us back to our history. Among them: Patriot's Day.

The holiday's roots go back to the American Revolution. History.com describes Patriot's Day as:

On April 19, 1775, the Battles of Lexington and Concord kicked off the colonists’ fight for independence from Great Britain. Just two months after Parliament declared Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion, the brave residents of the colony took up arms and went to battle for independence — eventually leading to the creation of the United States of America.

In the late 1800s, Massachusetts Gov. Frederic T. Greenhalge decided to add Patriot's Day to the calendar in an effort to recall the battles that help free the colonies, and the rest is history.

What is Independence Day?

Independence Day in the United States is celebrated every year on July 4 to commemorate the passing of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. This important document in our nation's history announced the original colonies' political separation from Great Britian.

According to Britannica, The origin of it's celebration was modeled after celebrations of the King's birthday during that time period, which was marked by bell ringing, bonfires, solemn processions and a public speech. Massachusetts was the first state to recognize the Fourth of July as an official holiday in 1781. To this day, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped 13 times every Fourth of July to honor the original 13 colonies.
