Q: Your book, In That Very Spot with Little Marcus Aurelius, has the perfect lesson for little readers that “happy exists and it’s theirs to own”. What inspired you to turn this lesson into a book for children?
A: In That Very Spot was inspired by the amazing impact I saw in both adults and children when introduced to refocusing. I knew with practice, Marcus Aurelius’ doctrine that we have the power over our mind regardless of external events can be meaningful for children as well. To my surprise, I could not find one kid’s book highlighting this timeless philosophy. So, I wrote one. When it is second nature to refocus, to take the 30,000 foot view, children build a magnificent stamina to find that “happy exists and it’s ours to own’. No longer can a pesky, daily, small obstacle snowball or turn their day to tatters. In That Very Spot blends tried and true wisdom with simple, yet relatable moments. Sharing uplifting messages that can deliver plentiful results is the brand of smart, modern, fun KidLit I hope my books can continue to provide.
Q: What was your favorite part when writing this book and what was the writing process like?
My favorite part of writing this book was knowing that I’d be sharing more than a story. I’d be sharing the best of each day; faith, hope, and the power of positive thinking. I say my books are a lot like giving a child their vegetables hidden in something sweeter. Yet, to bundle so many benefits from rich text to brilliant illustrations as an independent Author and publisher can make for a roller coaster of a writing process. I thank Spouse-ly for the platform that recognizes first responders like myself, retired now, who can re-purpose our experiences. After many years of being called to help others, often in their darkest moments, I have seen firsthand how refocusing adds value to the day. It allows us to “own happy” and navigate challenges including seeing value in correcting our own mistakes. Creating books that empower children to be confident and comfortable in forward thinking is my way of still offering encouragement. “For when they read, they can defeat giants!”
Q: What do you hope children remember most after reading the book?
A: I hope what young readers remember most about my books is a delight, a heartwarming feeling. I hope on the chilly evenings, lazy summer days and school nights that my books beckon young readers to cozy up and turn the page. Children are naturally curious. Their imaginations seek wonder and higher level thinking. And one boosts the other. I hope In That Very Spot, and all my stories, can bring the book fair to them. I hope young readers are reassured that their day, their very spot in the world has strength and that happy belongs to them too. Blending lovely, plentiful layers of higher level thinking in my books while preventing a lecture is a task. However, it is well worth it because the effects of reading routines with books like In That Very Spot are stunning! And it all begins when they open the book. The icing on the cake would be if my book can contribute to supercharging lifelong readers.
Q: What advice would you give to authors who want to lean into writing kids books?
A: Advice I’d give to aspiring Authors interested in creating children’s books is to allow yourself time and grace. A children’s book can be a hefty project. Initially, it boggled my mind how unaccessible big publishing can be. To put it nicely, they appear to not need us. So, rejoice in who does. Maintain the inspiration that led you to writing. Take breaks when needed and you’ll always return to your project with fresh eyes. Pro tip: warm cookies and a cup of fresh tea or coffee (some days both) can deliver an extra jolt of bliss that make writing and editing a bit smoother. I wish you a prosperous writing journey. Good luck and remember your story matters.
Q: Can you tell us more about any upcoming books/projects you currently have?
A: Thank you for asking. I am super excited for my upcoming project. It will still capture critical thinking in a sweet tale leading to a path toward joyful outcomes. Yet, it will also be like no other! It’s due to be released Fall 2025, gorgeous and will stir a never-ending warmth and love.
