Celebrating the 4th of July week in Washington, D.C., I was reminded that the American story is about more than history—it is about the values that continue to shape our lives. As I reflected on the events surrounding America's 250th anniversary, one truth stood above everything else: faith has always been at the heart of a lasting legacy.
On July 1, Faith, Values & Inspiration Day at the Great American State Fair invited visitors to consider a simple but profound question: What defines the American spirit? Throughout the Faith & Family Pavilion and the Museum of the Bible, I saw people reflecting on the values that have been passed from one generation to the next. Many shared how faith, family, and God's Word shaped who they are today—not through one extraordinary moment, but through countless everyday examples of love, service, prayer, and kindness.
It reminded me that values are not simply taught; they are lived. Whether around the dinner table, in church, or through the quiet example of someone serving a neighbor, our daily choices become the legacy we leave behind. As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, "Train up a child in the way he should go," emphasizing the importance of investing in future generations with faith as the foundation.
That message stayed with me as Independence Day arrived.
On July 4, the Freedom 250 Salute to America celebrated our nation's history with patriotic music, tributes to those who have served, and a spectacular fireworks display over the National Mall. It was a moving reminder of the sacrifices made to preserve our freedoms, but it also pointed me to an even greater truth. The fireworks illuminated the sky for only a few moments, but it reminded me that God's faithfulness shines far longer than any celebration ever could.
True freedom is more than the liberty we celebrate as Americans. It is the freedom we find in Christ—the freedom to love God, serve others, and live with purpose. Our nation's blessings are worth celebrating, but they also call us to gratitude and humility before the One from whom every good and perfect gift comes.
As America heads towards its next 250 years, my prayer is that we continue to pass down not only a love for our country, but also a steadfast faith in God. When faith shapes our values and those values guide our lives, we leave behind a legacy that will endure for generations.
