Selena Gomez opened up about feeling broken and seeking healing after accepting the title of American Music Award’s best pop-rock female artist on Sunday. This was Selena Gomez’s first public appearance after taking time off in August to heal from depression and panic attacks, according to Reuters.

In her acceptance speech, Gomez told the crowd, "I think it's safe to say that most of you know a lot of my life whether I liked it or not, and I had to stop, 'cause I had everything, and I was absolutely broken inside. And I kept it all together to where I never let you down. But I kept it too much together where I let myself down.”

“I don't want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what's in here," Gomez added, pointing to her heart and receiving a loud applause from the crowd.

A Christian, Gomez regularly attends Hillsong Church and is a self-proclaimed fan of Hillsong worship leader, Brooke Frasier. Gomez has even written and performed her own worship song, “Nobody,” of which she said, “I wrote this song about the one thing that holds it all together for me even when I can't bear to do it myself.”

Gomez believes that her struggles with depression may be connected to Lupus. "I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of Lupus, which can present their own challenges," The 24-year old said in a statement released in August. "I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off . . . I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best.”

It seems these past few months have certainly been a time of healing and reflection for Gomez. The applause after her American Music Awards speech was a nod to her bravely putting her health and happiness first and endeavoring to be the best she can for herself and her fans.
