Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, the images and stories of that tragic day remain deeply etched in the hearts of Americans. But among the stories of courage and sacrifice is one that unfolded on the waters surrounding Lower Manhattan.
This September, Great American Media commemorates the 25th anniversary of September 11 with the World Television Premiere of Boatlift 9/11, an award-winning original short film honoring the mariners and everyday citizens who answered an urgent call for help.
The film will stream exclusively on Great American Pure Flix beginning September 8.
The Largest Maritime Evacuation in History
As transportation out of Lower Manhattan came to a standstill on September 11, thousands of people made their way toward the water, searching for a way to escape.
Ferries, tugboats, and vessels began heading toward the shoreline, operated by people who saw others in need and chose to help. What started as an instinctive response to a scary situation grew into an extraordinary rescue effort. More than 100 vessels ultimately participated, helping evacuate approximately 500,000 people in what became the largest maritime evacuation in history.
A Story of Courage and Sacrifice
Inspired by Jessica DuLong’s Saved at the Seawall, Boatlift 9/11 tells the history of September 11 to life through the story of Captain Jan and her daughter, Britt.
Aboard their tugboat in New York Harbor when the first planes strike the World Trade Center, Jan and Britt race toward Battery Park, where survivors are stranded along the seawall. Their tug was never intended to carry large crowds, but as smoke and ash fill the waterfront, they begin pulling people aboard.
When Britt is swept into the river while attempting to save another passenger, Jan faces an impossible choice: search for her daughter or continue helping the people already depending on her.
After mother and daughter are reunited, they make the decision to return to Manhattan as a call goes out across the harbor for “all available boats.”
Their story is a powerful reminder of the courage, compassion and selflessness displayed by so many people during one of America's darkest days.
An Award-Winning Film
Boatlift 9/11 has already received recognition on the festival circuit. The Independent Shorts Awards International Film Festival named the film Best Short of the Season for June–July 2026.
The film also advanced to the festival's 2026 Annual Awards, earning nominations for Best Drama Short, Best Male Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing, and Best Original Score.
Remembering, Honoring and Supporting
As we mark 25 years since September 11, Boatlift 9/11 offers an opportunity to remember those we lost, honor the heroes who stepped forward and reflect on the many acts of courage and compassion that emerged in the aftermath.
